Why does my proof look different from my file?

Because the proof shows the sticker we will make, not the file you sent: the cut line and border are added, a background or drawn-in border may be taken off, white ink is placed on clear and specialty films, and the size is measured on the cut. Here is each change, and how to ask for it differently.

Your proof shows the sticker we are going to make, and a sticker is more than the file it starts from. We add what printing and cutting need, take off anything that would print by mistake, and show the design on the material you chose. Every change is on the proof so you see it before anything prints. If you'd rather have something done differently, tell us in the "Notes for us" box, and press "Request Changes". See how to request changes to your proof.

What usually changes

  • A cut line and a border appear. We draw the cut around your artwork, standing off it by the border you chose (Thin, Standard, or Thick). The dashed line is not printed. See what the dashed line means and border options.
  • A background is gone. If your file has a plain background around the design, such as the white box a JPG carries, we take it off so the sticker can be cut to your shape. A colored background that is part of the design stays. See do I need a transparent background?
  • A white border you drew is gone. If your transparent file already has a white outline around the design, we take it off and cut our own border, so you don't end up with two.
  • The size reads differently. Size is measured on the cut line, along the longest side, not on your file's canvas. See the sticker size guide.
  • Fine spikes look smoother. A blade can't follow every pixel, so the cut line is smoothed around tiny points and gaps. We generally round sharp points so the sticker lasts.

On clear, holographic, glitter, and chrome stickers

Clear Stickers, Holographic Stickers, Glitter Stickers, and Chrome Stickers are films we print onto, and the proof shows the material behind your colors. The proof is a representation of the finished sticker:

  • White you see on the proof is white ink.
  • Where white ink sits under the design, colors read solid, and the material's effect doesn't show (or, on clear, you can't see through).
  • Where there is no white ink, the material shows through the ink.

That can make a design look very different from the file on a white screen. On the proof page, "Show White Ink" lays solid white over the proof where the white ink goes. On holographic, glitter, and chrome, moving your mouse over the proof (or tapping around it on a phone) shows the material catching the light; that effect is simulated. See reading a holographic, glitter, or chrome proof and where white ink should go.

Colors look slightly different

Your screen makes color with light, and the sticker makes it with ink. The proof is shown on a screen too, so it can't show printed color exactly. See why screen and printed color never quite match.

If we fixed something

If your file wasn't print-ready (type that wasn't outlined, a soft low-resolution image, or artwork too close to the edge), we fix what can be fixed and show you what changed on the proof. If we fixed something in a way you didn't want, say so in the "Notes for us" box, and press "Request Changes".
