Do I need a transparent background?

Not always, but it helps. For a sticker cut to the shape of your design, a PNG with a transparent background shows us exactly where your design ends. If yours has a solid background, we can usually take it off for you.

Not always, but it helps most on a custom-shape sticker, the kind cut to the outline of your design. We draw the cut line around your artwork, and transparency tells us where the artwork stops. If your file has a plain background, we can usually take it off for you.

A PNG can carry a transparent background. A JPG can't: it always has a background, usually a white rectangle.

When it matters

Your sticker Does the background need to be transparent?
Custom shape, cut around your design It helps most here. A background left in the file reads as part of the design.
Circle, Oval, Square, or Rectangle No. The shape sets the cut, and a background often fills it on purpose.
Clear, Holographic, Glitter, or Chrome Yes. A background left in the file can cover the material, and the sticker stops looking clear or shiny.

If your file has a background

We can usually take a plain background off for you, and your proof shows the result. A plain, even background comes off cleanly. A busy photo background, or a subject close in color to what's behind it, takes more care, so tell us what should stay.

A colored background that's part of the design, like a badge sitting on a colored panel, is kept. If you meant it to come off, say so when you order, or press "Request Changes" on your proof.

We do take off a white border drawn into a transparent file. We cut our own border around your design, so a drawn-in one would leave you with two. You choose that border's width on the product page; see sticker border options.

How to export a transparent PNG

  • Canva: choose Share → Download → PNG, then tick "Transparent background". It's a Canva Pro feature, so without Pro the PNG comes with a white rectangle. See our Canva guide for the other route.
  • Photoshop: hide or delete the Background layer until you see the gray-and-white checkerboard. Then choose File → Export → Export As, pick PNG, and keep "Transparency" ticked.
  • Procreate: in the Layers panel, untick "Background color", then choose Actions → Share → PNG.
  • Illustrator: send the AI, SVG, or PDF itself, which is better than a PNG. If you need a PNG, choose File → Export → Export As → PNG, with "Background Color" set to "Transparent".

Saving the same artwork as a JPG puts a background back, so keep it as a PNG.

Check it on something dark

Artwork of Huey, our mascot, on a dark background three ways: a clean transparent edge, a white box behind it, and a pale halo around it

A transparent PNG and one with a white background look the same on a white screen. Open yours over a dark background and look at the edges. If you're previewing a White or High-Tack vinyl sticker with the optional "Live Sticker Proof", its "View On" control can show the sticker on black or a checkerboard.

  • A white box means the background is still there.
  • A thin pale outline is a halo left by a quick background removal. On a white border it disappears. With No Border, or on clear vinyl, it shows.
  • Soft shadows and glows fade out with no clear edge to cut along, so check where the cut line lands around them on your proof.
