Compliance text on small labels

Keep required text at 6 pt or larger (8 pt for thin fonts), and find room with a better shape, a back label, or a slightly larger label.

Keep required text at 6 pt or larger (8 pt for thin fonts), and find room with a better shape, a second label, or a slightly larger size. A regulated product often has to carry more text than the container has room for, so this is a layout problem with a few real fixes and one hard limit.

The hard limit

Below a certain size, type stops being readable, however well it's printed. A 4 pt ingredient list is unreadable in a store. Our minimum is 6 pt, or 8 pt for thin fonts such as light weights and scripts. See fonts that survive printing.

Use your proof to judge this before the run. If the text looks marginal on screen, expect it to look worse in your hand.

Getting more room

  • Change the shape. Squares and rectangles give much more usable line length than circles, where every line loses space at the edges.
  • Use two labels: a front for the brand and a back for the information. Each is its own design with its own minimum: 25 of a design on sheet labels, and 100 on roll labels.
  • Go slightly larger. A tenth of an inch more label is often the difference between cramped and comfortable. The calculator on the product page shows the price at each size.
  • Point to the details. A QR code can take a customer to full information that will never fit on a tin.

Keep it clear of the cut

Keep everything that must be read inside the safe area: 0.09" inside the cut line on stickers and sheet labels, and 1/8" on roll labels. On a crowded label, the required text is what gets pushed toward the edge when space runs out, and text at the edge is the text most at risk of being trimmed. Check it on your proof. See safe area and bleed on labels.

Batch codes

If every unit needs its own code, variable data printing prints them in one run. Prices are for print-ready artwork. If you'd like us to add codes or numbering, we can help, so reach out for a quote.

Design for the longest value, not the first. Check your spreadsheet before you send it, because we print exactly what is in it.

Small runs are fine

The minimum is 25 of a design on sheet labels and 100 on roll labels, so a small batch or a test-market product doesn't need a huge order.
