A sticker won't hold on a pipe or tank that's wet with condensation. Clean and dry the spot first, and if the surface never dries, label the line while it's off or put the sticker somewhere dry beside it.
Plumbing gets the surfaces nobody else wants: tanks that sweat, dusty crawlspaces, and powder-coated softener cabinets. Two rules cover most of what goes wrong.
Rule one: wipe it and let it dry
Adhesive bonds to whatever it touches. On a dusty tank, that's the dust, not the steel. The sticker looks well applied and lifts a month later.
Wipe the exact spot with isopropyl alcohol, then let it dry completely. It takes thirty seconds, and it's the step most often skipped.
Rule two: if it never dries, label somewhere else
A cold line that runs with condensation all the time defeats any pressure-sensitive adhesive, ours included. Label the line while it's off and dry, or put the sticker on a dry surface beside it.
Powder coating and rough plastic
Softener cabinets, pump housings, and equipment covers are often powder-coated or textured. Our standard White vinyl is made to peel off cleanly, which works against you on those surfaces.
High-Tack vinyl is the same print with a much stronger adhesive, made for exactly those surfaces. If tags have lifted at the corners on one kind of equipment, choose High-Tack for that equipment. High-Tack vinyl has more.
Cold slows the bond
Adhesive has to flow to bond, and cold slows it down. In an unheated crawlspace in winter, press the sticker on firmly and leave it alone. Adhesive builds most of its strength over the first day or two, not right away. Applying stickers in cold weather has more.
Damp and dark is fine
A crawlspace is easier on a sticker than a roof. Ultraviolet light is what fades print, and there's none under a house. Our laminated vinyl is weatherproof, so damp and dust don't wear it out.
Ordering
Our plumbing stickers come in vinyl, from 50 of a design, or High-Tack vinyl, from 100. For the rest of the routine, see how to apply a sticker so it stays on, and for tag layout, see plumbing stickers: damp, dark, and dusty.
